Despite all of the hype to the contrary, the majority of surgeries (both plastic and otherwise) go off without a hitch and everyone involved is at least somewhat pleased with the result, but a growing number of people are falling victim to what are known as super bugs. These bacteria haunt the halls of today’s modern hospitals just waiting for a warm, moist host to crawl into. You have probably heard of a staph infection but staph is only one of the many different kinds of infections just waiting to turn your breast augmentation into a nightmare. Here are a few signs you should keep in mind that could signal that you are having breast augmentation complications.
It is quite difficult to tell after the first day if you are okay or if there is something wrong because the pain associated with normal augmentation recovery is so high that an increased level of pain due to an infection can’t really be known or felt. After four or five days, however, the body has healed considerably and a sharp increase in pain that often comes with an infection can easily be noticed. An increase in pain is your body’s way of telling you that you have breast augmentation problems that need to be dealt with right away.
Oddly enough, the more time you spend in the hospital after your surgery, the more breast augmentation risks you are taking. Although it isn’t impossible to pick up a serious infection at home, many of today’s super bugs are found almost exclusively in hospitals, so recovering at home is probably the best idea, however, once at home, you need to keep a close eye on your temperature. Often times, the body will tell you that something is wrong if you begin to run a fever after surgery. Your body will naturally increase its temperature to create an environment that is less hospitable to germs and bacteria, but too high a fever can cause brain damage and other abnormalities. If you have been recovering for more than 24 hours and you notice that you are running a fever, contact a hospital right away.
Finally, there will be a good amount of swelling, puffiness and discoloration in and around your chest. This area will also be quite tender to the touch, but if you should happen to notice an increase in tenderness over a period of days instead of a reduction, you may want to check to see if the other two symptoms named here are present, as well. If so, contact your surgeon right away. Breast enlargement surgery can still be a wonderful way to improve your appearance, but you have to know the warning signs that something is wrong.
